How to store perfume: a practical checklist
Keep perfume away from light and heat, close the bottle carefully and follow the product information. Use this checklist to choose a practical place for your bottles.

Store perfume in a dark, dry place away from heat, and close the bottle carefully after use. A cupboard or drawer may be suitable. Also check the instructions on your bottle and packaging: these remain your guide to storing that particular product.
Choose a suitable storage spot
Consider the conditions first, then the room. Parfums de Marly recommends a dark, cool place away from moisture, sunlight and high temperatures. A closed cupboard away from sunlight and heating fits that advice. A windowsill or a shelf above a radiator is therefore a less suitable choice. Read the storage advice from Parfums de Marly.
The bathroom is convenient during your morning routine, but it can become warm and humid. Lancôme recommends a dark, cool, dry place with a consistent temperature instead. Giving your perfume a regular spot in a suitable bedroom cupboard is therefore a better option. Do check that the cupboard itself is not next to a heat source. See Lancôme's storage tips.
Take care of the bottle and box
Replace the cap after use and check that it is secure. CHANEL recommends keeping the bottle tightly closed and using the original packaging to protect it from light. Keep the box as a practical storage option, particularly if the bottle would otherwise be in a bright room. Read CHANEL's fragrance FAQ.
Keep the label legible and store the product instructions with the bottle. You will not have to guess which version you own later. Set aside a bottle with a damaged closure and ask the retailer or manufacturer what to do.
Work through the storage checklist
- Is the bottle out of direct sunlight?
- Is it away from radiators and other heat sources?
- Does the storage spot stay dry and at a reasonably consistent temperature?
- Is the cap or closure securely back in place after use?
- Do you still have the label and any storage instructions?
- Can you easily return the bottle to the same suitable spot?
That last question is particularly helpful in practice. A drawer you use every day makes careful storage easier than a box at the back of a high shelf.
Check information and changes
Do not automatically apply one brand's storage period to another perfume. Check the information for your own product. You may want to note when you open the bottle so you can find that date later.
Have you noticed a clear change in the scent, appearance or closure? Do not draw a firm conclusion about shelf life from that alone. Have the product name and any batch code ready, and ask the manufacturer or retailer for advice about your bottle.
Frequently asked questions
Should perfume go in the fridge?
A recommendation for cool storage does not automatically mean using a fridge. Lancôme suggests a dark cupboard or drawer with a consistent temperature as a suitable option. Follow any different instructions from your perfume's manufacturer.
Should I keep the original box?
The box can help keep light out. CHANEL recommends the original packaging. Also make sure the place where you keep the box is protected from heat.
How many years does perfume last?
Do not use a fixed number of years for all perfumes. Look up the instructions for your product and, if in doubt, ask about the specific bottle.
